G’s TIMELINE
1994
I came out whilst in high school, in rural Lancashire.
1994-1997
bullying and harassment in school/college due to sexuality
1996 (aged 17)
I tried to set up an LGBTQ group at my local 6th form college and was told it was ‘illegal’ for me to do that (section 28).
- Instead, I found a venue in the local town, trained as a peer facilitator and set up an independent group instead.
1996-1998
Member of LGYM (Lesbian & Gay Youth Manchester) Activism included:
- Campaigning against Manchester city council when they refused to run an LGBTQ+ awareness workshop in their massive ‘European Year of the Child’ event at Old Trafford. We turned up anyway, wearing sweatshirts I printed at home saying ‘The Workshop They Tried To Stop’ and we held it over the lunch break in the foyer. It was the highest-attended session of the whole event.
- Marching in various prides, campaigning for the repeal of Section 28
